Coup in Batu Sapi
WINNER OR NOT ..... Samsudin Yahya addressing the Batu Sapi delegates on Saturday.
20th October, 2008
KOTA KINABALU: Datuk Samsuddin Yahya, a contender for the Batu Sapi Umno division chief post pulled off a “coup” by bulldozing the division’s annual meeting without the division’s chief or even its secretary present.
However, the Sekong assemblyman’s bid is likely to fail as all pointers show that he had acted on his own and did not follow the meeting rules in “toppling” division chief, Datuk Juhar Mahiruddin.
Juhar, the state Speaker, said that the meeting held at the Sandakan community hall on Saturday was invalid as he had used his power as division chief to postpone the meeting as both the Batu Sapi Youth and Wanita wings had technical problems over their meetings.
“I wanted to let them (Youth and Wanita) sort their problems and join the main division meetings,” he said, adding that they were scheduling the meeting for the first week of November.
Following the “questionable meeting” by his deputy, Juhar said he had sent out a notice to Sabah Umno secretariat to check on the validity of the meeting conducted by Samsuddin.
“I believe it is an illegal meeting as they did not follow the procedures of meeting including tabling the secretary’s report,” he added.
Juhar, who is a cousin of Samsudin, said; “I don’t know why my brother is in such a hurry, he can’t wait is it? He is acting like President Mugabe of Zimbawe.”
Samsudin could not be reached for comments while state Umno secretariat officials said the matter was under investigation and admitted that there were a lot of questions over the validity of the meeting. In the controversial meeting.
Samsudin secured 234 votes to win the contest while Juhar only garnered 12 votes at the community centre here. There were 27 spoilt votes in the contest.
Two hundred and ninety out of the 465 delegates attended the meeting. But Juhar was absent along with the division secretary.
The meeting went ahead despite an announcement of its postponement by Juhar several days earlier.
Ariffin Asgali polled 196 votes to win the deputy chairman post formerly held by Datuk Samsudin.
Two other candidates Hajihil Nagier and Haji Faisal Datuk Ampong could only obtain 40 and 12 votes respectively.
The vice chairman’s post was won by Sahak Noh after he managed to secure 116 votes while his challengers Haji Mohd Rizuan got 56 votes and Abdul Rahman Bun 16 votes.
The division nominated Deputy Prime Minister Dato Seri Najib Tun Razak for the UMNO presidency, Trade and Industry Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin for the deputy president’s post.
For vice president, the division nominated Education Minister Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Tun Hussein, Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister Datuk Shafie Apdal , Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohd. Khaled Nordin.
The delegates also gave their backing to Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Haji Aman, Kimanis Member of Parliament Datuk Anifah Haji Aman, State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun, Kinabatangan Member of Parliament Datuk Bung Moktar Radin and deputy Transport Minister Datuk Lajim Ukin for the supreme council seats.
